Remember a time when you were grieving a loss. How were friends and family the most help to you?
Bible passage: Matthew 5:1-4
Bible Verse: “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.” – Matthew 5:4
1. What causes us to mourn? Our verse says that we will be blessed when we mourn. How can mourning or grieving be a good thing?
2. Read Mt 5:3,4. Last week we discussed how “poor in Spirit” meant that we admit we need God. How might v. 4 be connected to v. 3?
3. What brokenness in the world has caused you to feel sorrow? What about in your family? Your own life?
4. Read these verses about God’s comfort. Isaiah 40;1-3, Isaiah 61:1-3, Jn 14:26, 2 Cor 2:3,4.
The Greek Word for comforter is also translated as advocate or counselor and is the same root the New Testament uses for the Holy Spirit. What is Jesus promising his listeners if they feel distress over the presence of sin? When you feel sorrow about the mess the world is in or the mess you’ve made of your life, how can you find comfort through Jesus Christ?
What’s Next?
There is hope! Because of what Jesus did for us, we don’t have to stay in our pit of despair forever! He sent a solution for our despair. God is with us in our darkest moments.
This week, memorize and meditate on the words of Isaiah 41:10:
“So do not fear, for I am with you;
do not be dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you and help you;
I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
According to 2 Corinthians 1:3,4, we can offer this same comfort to others. Look for an opportunity to share this brand of comfort you find in Jesus Christ with someone else.
