It’s time for a give-away.
My three books, part of the Rainbow Publisher’s Five Minute Sunday School series, are hot off the press and I’m so excited about them. They look wonderful and I love this concept. If you or someone you know love teaching children but are short on time and supplies, this series is for you.
Maybe you are a harried Sunday School teacher who needs a Plan B for those unexpected moments when you have to throw together a lesson. How about a short term mission trip where you might be able to grab a group of kids together and you want to make every moment count? Even if you are a parent or grandparent and you want to give your kids a Bible based activity, this book is for you. All you need is the book and a copy machine or the copy feature on your computer printer. A pair of scissors, pencils and crayons and you are ready to go!
My giveaway this week is the book, “Built on a Rock,” forty-two lesson on the establishment of the church. In my over 30 years of teaching children, I’ve been surprised to find very few lessons about the church in the curriculum I’ve used. Plenty of lessons on Noah, Joseph and baby Jesus, but when was the last time you taught a lesson about the Ephesian Christians getting rid of bad books or or Paul and the poisonous snake?
Acts is filled with amazing stories that children can relate to. When so many church institutions have strayed from God’s original plan for the church, we need to show our kids what the church stood for in the beginning. We need to introduce them to these great men and women of faith who were passionate about evangelism, strong enough in their faith to stand up to resistance, and loving and joy-filled enough to reach out with generosity and compassion to hurting, lost and confused people. The church really is an exciting, vibrant group of people that God uses to spread the news of His plan of salvation throughout the world. Invite the children in your life to be part of that exciting group. Most of all, we need to show our kids that the church is build in the solid rock foundation of Jesus Christ, that His leadership and His authorship of this institution called the Church is totally trustworthy.
Ahem, did I say giveaway? Yes! Send me a comment with your email address and a description of the children you want to reach out to with Jesus’ life-giving message. I’ll hold a drawing Friday and send the winner a free book. Check here to learn more about “Built on a Rock.”
In the meantime, this day, remember this: Use every available opportunity to proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord – especially to the children in your life.

Reaching children with the Word is so very important, but we all know the world doesn’t miss any opportunity to reach them.

We certainly have our work cut out for us.

The children I work with are both church kids and kids from a poor area of town. We have midweek kid’s church at a house in the neighborhood. I agree with you about teaching more than the typical bible stories. Not that they aren’t wonderful and important. Looking forward to reading your newsletter.

You might want to look into the Rainbow 5 Minute Sunday School Activities series for this group of kids. Also, the Salvation Army has a series of books called Sonday’sCool along with some auxiliary material directed at unchurched, poor children. I love this style. The lessons are simple, easy to prepare, don’t require a lot of costly supplies and teach the Word. May the Lord magnify your efforts in reaching these children in His name.

Most of the kids at our church — over half — come to our ministry without their parents. This is such a needed ministry. They don’t even know basic bible characters. So sad and scary. Judges 2:10 has come to pass: and there arose another generation after them, which knew not the LORD, nor yet the works which he had done for Israel. Except I believe we’ve lost two generations and it’s the churches’ fault. Wonderful book, Karen! Thanks for the giveaway! karla.akins at karlaakins.com

So very true, Karla. I’ve seen this too and my heart breaks. This is a great resource. I love the concept. I love the structure. I love the content. And I would say that even if I hadn’t written it. Not long ago, I taught a class on the second chapter of Acts. The curriculum (not this) went off in another direction about daily living. It didn’t do basic teaching about what the church is. And the class I was teaching didn’t know! I threw out the lesson and talked with them about what is the church – building or people – and what does the church do – not just the external motions. The best part is, they got it! We really, really need to focus on the basics. Make it simple. Make it fun!
Thanks for responding and sorry for the soapbox. Can you tell I’m passionate about children’s ministry?

Hi Karen, so glad to hear about yr new books, Built On A Rock, for children’s teachers. I love teaching 1st & 2nd graders in Bible Study hour…love their curiousity & open hearts. Even more, as I read your intro about your books, I couldn’t helpthinking about the new neighbors across the street with a variety of young, energetic children…an instant group for a neighborhood Bible class. I’m sure you remember our neighborhood. Your books sound very practical & flexible. There’s even a hearing-impaired child in the mix! So, if you throw my name in your “pot” I would greatly appreciate it! Joyfully, Pam Eubanks

You got it, Pam! And stay tuned. If you don’t win this drawing, there will be others in the coming weeks.

Karen, I’m wondering if your book will help me with ideas for Web content. I’ve been tapped to write an ‘article’ to parents each month that encourages them to reinforce the month’s Funday School theme at home. I try to find discussion topics, craft activities, youtube videos and even free ebooks and incorporate them into the article. Put my name into your drawing! Maybe your book will inspire me!
