The Wingate Family is not serving turkey for Thanksgiving.
It’s the day before Thanksgiving. I can hardly wait! One daughter is here; we are waiting on the other. I’m finding and printing the recipes I’ll need. Flan, Chicken Mole’, refried beans . . .
Whoops! Do I have the right holiday? Sigh. Yes I do. The Wingate family has to be different. The family mutinied on me and reminded me how much they don’t like turkey. When our two daughters come home, they want their favorite home-style meals that represent our family heritage, meals that signify the special occasions in our family life. For us, the best representative of that is Mexican Food.
Regardless of what is on the table, I can hardly wait to gather my family and rejoice in how we’ve seen God at work in the past year. He’s done a lot for us this year. We have much to celebrate.
We feel this way every year. Wow! Look what God did. Look how He blessed us. Look how he is helping us grow, how He provided for us, how He used us to do His Kingdom work. Our Thanksgiving meal becomes a commemoration of what God has specifically done for us in the past year.
Come to think of it, that’s what the Pilgrims had in mind when they chose to have a day of Thanksgiving. The food was out of their abundance of what they had on hand, not what they were traditionally used to. The focus was on thanking God for what He had done for them in the past year.
So the Wingate family is observing the traditions of Thanksgiving. Just without the turkey.
What has God done for you? Share it around your table.
