Psalm 2: Who Rules?

All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the Lord,
and all the families of the nations will bow down before him,
for dominion belongs to the Lord and he rules over the nations.” – Psalm 22:27,28

What world situation currently gives you the greatest cause for concern?

This Psalm is known as a Messianic Psalm because it contains prophecies about Jesus, the coming Messiah.

1. What words or phrases in this Psalm make you think of Jesus?

2. Why would God laugh at the nations?

3. The Psalm describes God as a ruler. How is God like a king? Why is this an apt description for God?

4. The writer suggests we hold lightly to our allegiance to earthly rulers and tightly to our allegiance to God as the ultimate ruler? From what you read in Psalm 2, why is this important?

5. Look at v. 12. What power does God have in dealing with those who are not faithful to him? What will he do for those who take refuge in him? Tthink about the meaning of the word “blessed” and what you discovered in Psalm 1.

6. What misplaced trust have you put in the leadership of your country? In what areas of your political stance do you need to transfer your trust in an earthly ruler to God as the ultimate Ruler?

7. As many in the United States feel tension over the coming political election, what advice from this Psalm would you give to a friend or co-worker who is feeling anxious about the future of the United States? Citizens of other countries are experiencing even greatest unrest and violence that surround unstable governments. Does the same advice apply to them? How might it be different? The same?

Spend time thanking God for His supreme rule over the nations and his ultimate judgment for their lack of loyalty and obedience. I encourage you to spend time telling the Lord that you once again place yourself willingly under His rule and authority.
